| Ramirez Filomeno de Vargas, Elvira, 76, of Mariners Harbor, a hot-dog
vendor, died Wednesday at home, of cancer. Born in PR, she moved to Manhattan
in 1960 and to Brooklyn in 1965. She moved to Queens in 1984 and settled
in Mariners Harbor last April. Mrs. Vargas was a hot-dog vendor for 10 yrs.
at various locations in NY City. She was a parishioner of St. Clement's/St.
Michael's R.C. Parish, Mariners Harbor. Mrs. Vargas enjoyed cooking and spending
time with her family. "She was our hero, she had faith and strength. She
was the light in our eyes and our best friend, a true abundance of grace,"
said her daughter, Lillian Piñero. In addition to her daughter, Lillian,
surviving are her husband, Sebastian; her son, Victor; and 5 grandchildren.

| Ramos, Catalino R., 94, of New Brighton, a retired merchant seaman &
a poet, died Monday at his granddaughter's home in Beachwood, NJ Born in
PR, he moved to Manhattan in 1942 & to Brooklyn in 1952 before settling
in New Brighton in 1980. Mr. Ramos was a merchant seaman, retiring in 1980.
For his service in the Merchant Marine during WW II, he received service
credit from the Coast Guard & was honorably discharged by the Coast Guard
in 1947. Mr. Ramos was a member of the Seamen's Institute union. He was
passionate about poetry, & enjoyed politics, cooking & gardening.
"He was loved dearly & will live forever," said his granddaughter, Anita

Robles Rios, Gloria Josefina. Born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, on Oct. 23,
1918. The daughter of an Evangelical preacher and a homemaker, she was one
of nine children.
Gloria grew up in Ponce, Puerto Rico, where, while attending high school
in 1936-38, she met Mario Villamarzo in her biology class. He joined the
U.S. Army and they married on April 26, 1941. They were inseparable for 63
years. During hard times and good times their love was steadfast. Their
devotion to each other was unquestionable and admirable.
Gloria was a loving and devoted wife, a caring and compassionate mom to three
children: Gloria, of Sierra Vista, Mario Jr. of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Ileana
of Columbus, Ohio, and a doting abuelita to her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. |
A resident of Sierra Vista since January 1997, she enjoyed tending to her
plants on her patios, watching Sabado Gigante with Don Francisco on TV and
playing bingo at Our Lady of the Mountains Church Bingo Hall.
Gloria died at home Friday, May 7, 2004, in the presence of her husband,
daughters, son-in-law, grandson and great-grandchildren. She is survived
by her husband, Mario; two daughters, Gloria (David Dueltgen) and Ileana
(Stan Vermilyea) and one son, Mario, Jr. (Yvonne Shattuck); seven grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren.
A time of visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2004,
at Jensen's Sierra Vista Mortuary, 5515 S. Highway 92, in Sierra Vista. Graveside
services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 2004, at the Southern Arizona
Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1300 Buffalo Soldier Trail, in Sierra Vista.
