Puerto Rico
1910 U.S. Federal Population Census Project

Transcript Project

Somebody once said to me that the US federal census is the foundation of genealogical research and I agree. Notice that after you interview your closest relatives this is usually the first record type you examine when beginning your family history search. Also, it is the one that continues to be a touchstone as your research progresses.

So to help you out with these censuses, here is what we know:

Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States in 1898 as a result of the Spanish-American War, and in 1899 the US War Ministry conducted a special census. However, the records were destroyed by fire and only the statistical figures survived or so I have been told.

1899 Supervisors of Porto Rico Census

(Taken from the Report of the Census of Porto Rico, 1899 by Lt. Col. J.P. Sanger, Inspector General, Washington Govt. Printing Office, 1900)

U.S. Federal Censuses are available at the National Archives, LDS Family History Center's as well as many libraries. For a small fee, you can review them at Ancestry.com and also for a fee, they are commercially available on CD's from various sources. Or you can become a member of this site and peruse our on going project .

Our Project

Our goal is to partially transcribe the Puerto Rico 1910 U.S. Federal Census in a standard format for the benefit of all the genealogical researchers on the Internet.  We say partially because not all fields will be extracted. Only enough information for you to be able to recognize an individual and also be able to easily locate the person on the original document.  In other words, it is a finding tool.

It should not be considered to be proof, or that it is always 100% accurate, or contains all of the information in the actual document. Once you have found a record of interest, then you should locate the original record to review the rest of the information.

We should point out that information is presented exactly as it was gathered by the enumerator and although we know the census taker wrote down the names the way they heard them, not necessarily the way your ancestors spelled them no correction of any kind will be done by us as we don't want to alter the data.  Also, the photographs used on this project and added to the some of the listed persons are obtained from various sources like photos in books, passport applications, email attachments sent by family, found on the internet, etc.

What is different about our project from others is that for 1. we do not transcribe everything just enough for researchers to recognized their relatives and 2. we add a picture to the name if we get a hold of the picture.

Many Happy Discoveries!

Sorry, but in order to view transcribed census data for
any of the towns, you need to become a member.

We are the only place on the web that is trying to give a face to the persons listed on the 1910 census. Please help us give a face to a listed person.

If you have a picture of any of the listed names under this Census Project and we have already transcribed the ward

where he/she is listed, we will be honor to include his/her picture next to his/her name.

To add a picture just send us an e-mail and let us know the name of your relative, on which page you saw his/her name and don't forget to send us the picture.

If necessary, picture will be edited at our discretion and extremely poor quality photographs will not be accepted.
